Fall in October? Groundbreaking. Before you decide to modern day Sylvia Plath via air fryer, we have some freshly baked content for you to shove down your pumpkin lined pie-holes. Open up whores!!
We’re in a place of hating Ted Hughes and loving Edward Cullen. Of saying “it’s basic because it’s GOOD” while slurping down a grande shaken espresso with pumpkin cream cold foam. Of secretly consuming candy corn while actively talking shit about it on Twitter. Of road tripping to cute suburban fall-tivities (read: coercing a male to drive you 2 hours to the PUMPKIN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD in central Illinois while you trip on shrooms and stare out the window in a state of conflict because even though he’s Nice And Sweet And Has A Car, you didn’t mean for things to get this far), despite the fact that we're actively dreaming of a car-less society.
Think orange, think spooky, think “does this drink taste like a candle?”. Allow yourself to amorously gaze at the colors and bask in the basicness abound. Unapologetically give in to all things Caitlin Covington adjacent. Let the crisp air join your vape pen in filling your lungs while your brain attempts to produce serotonin. To accompany this head-first dive into fall, we offer you, Dear Readers, a mood-inducing Fall Playlist with an accompanying Song Guide to get off the edge of the diving board and into the nearest crunchy pile of leaves. Look forward to our weekly posts this month detailing everything we’re consuming related to fall.
Love you witches!!
Fall Playlist:
Song Guide:
Ah fall. The time of flannels and pumpkins and hot beverages on cold nights. When we enter Cuffing Season Finals with whoever is left on our roster and hope it isn't a four game sweep. Where brooding and yearning and longing take over whatever whore-slut-hot girl energy transformed us into feral animals all summer. Whenever this season rolls around, I skew my Spotify Wrapped stats by exclusively listening to Americana and Folk. Is this purposeful? No. Is it innate to “Melaina in Fall”? Yes. The following playlist encompasses a twang that skews more towards taste and less towards "where were they on January 6th?". It's meant to be listened to with your current, future, or past boo in mind. Don't worry, self-care journey darlings, there are some selections (2) for those of you finding your way. I hope this playlist and guide find you in various fall scenes: in the car on your way to the pumpkin patch, making chili in your kitchen with the windows open, or drinking mulled wine with friends around a fire. Best served straight up rather than on shuffle! Playlist sommelier notes below:
Moon Song - Phoebe Bridgers
Anyone wanna hold me like water in their hands? Or fight about John Lennon until I cry? But why isn't "Halloween" on here? Isn’t it the obvious choice? I'd argue that baby, it's Halloween, and (the choice) can be anything.
Paint - The Paper Kites
The Hipster Movement's best byproduct, IMO. Every song feels like fall, but this one cuts to a side of cuffing season rarely discussed: the ones who don't make it.
Road - Nick Drake
I'll take a road that sees me through to the end of fall where I will immediately stop driving because that means winter and that means seasonal depression and that means not enjoying any of Nick Drake's music the same way.
That's How I Got To Memphis - Tom T. Hall
Tom T. Hall answers the brave question we're all thinking when we've been blinded by our feelings.
Where I'm Going - The Wild Reeds
Unlike Tom T. Hall, this dreamy Americana girl group, like me, has no idea where they're going but know no one can replace their boo!
Chinatown - Girlpool
Scorpio season is coming. Don't you also feel restless when you realize you're alive?
Solitary Daughter - Bedouine
Syrian singer-songwriter Bedouine provides food for thought for those of us who are opting out of cuffing season and opting in for dealing with our daddy issues
If It's The Beaches - The Avett Brothers
It's cuffing season and if it's the beaches then you will have them BITCH because I ain't ever gonna stop loving you BITCHHHH (for now).
Without a Face - Luluc
Famously included on the soundtrack Fall of My Freshman Year. The initial guitar harmonies sound like the first leaves of fall finding their way to the ground, while the final mix of sounds is the one week where everything seems to come crashing down. Or whatever.
For Emma - Bon Iver
This song is included for two reasons, and two reasons only: I'm personally ready for the rehabilitation of Bon Iver as Cool because he is An Ally, and I had sex to this once during the fall and it was Very Hot. Sorry!!!!
Jonathan - Adrianne Lenker
To our left we see Adrianne Lenker internally screaming yet calmly singing what unrequited love does to us. Are you there?
Flightless Bird, American Mouth - Iron & Wine
It’s Twilight Season!!!
Chasing The Sun - Angel Olsen
A fall-ier (?) song has never existed before. Unprecedented. Unrivaled. Unmatched. Angel Olsen's voice floats above calm orchestration as she sings about where unrequited love takes her. EYE would never do this to you, Angel.
You and Me On The Rock - Brandi Carlile
The perfect bridge between late Summer and fall is actually any song by Brandi Carlile. But the chorus of this song perfectly encapsulates the joy of cohabiting during harvesting season.
Blind - Bnny
SERVING INSTRUCTIONS: best enjoyed sitting directly in the 4 PM sun, with a light jacket, a delicious beverage, a pearled joint, and a hot lover.
No Woman - Whitney
For when you make-out after you serve the above song. This has been user tested and approved.
Wildewoman - Lucius
For those who are bae-less,perfectly okay with it, and simply on their own journey. You're gonna find your way back home, babes!
Hold on You - Valley Queen
Included for those of you who have a music aficionado you're spitting game at right now. Whether they love War on Drugs, Wet Leg, or swear they only listen to "the classic singer-songwriters, nothing like the garbage put out today", this song will impress them enough to get their handcuffs ready.
It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody - Weyes Blood
THAT girl. THIS song. THEE thumb on the pulse of current reality. I would argue this is the best opening lyric to a song since miss Lorde herself asked the boldest question of the 2010s. In the end, it's not just me, it's everybody, so we should figure it out together <3
Forget Me Not - The Civil Wars
Did they fuck? Is Joy the reason for John's divorce? Will they ever get back together? Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z.
